A mother in the Upper Berbice River, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), said she was helpless and could do nothing to protect her 11-year-old daughter from her husband, her child’s stepfather.
Reports arriving at this publication showed that the matter had been reported to Kwakwani Police Station which is located several miles away but, according to close family associates, no substantive investigation was undertaken.
Guyana Times understands that the matter was also reported to Toshao the village, however, as the stepfather is said to be a prominent figure in the community, no action has been taken.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl from the same community was sexually abused by a young man, who had been working in the community for the past few months.
According to one village source, the teenager went missing after a night last week and a search party was formed that went to the homes of a few of the village’s young men.
However, after contacting a businessman, he called his employee by telephone and instructed him to bring the youth back to the village.
The young man and the young man have given different accounts of the whole incident. The girl has since contacted an 80-year-old man from the village about the rape.
However, it is reported that the Police have not conducted an investigation.
The young woman, who has no birth parents in the village, has been sent to another community to live with relatives.
In the meantime, the Child Care and Protection Agency has since been contacted and is reportedly investigating. (G4)
