19 dorm students, 10 teachers test positive for COVID-19 – Guyana Newsroom

About 40 people at the dorm location in schools across Guyana have tested positive for COVID-19 since reopening schools on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony provided the information while speaking on the issue during Thursday’s COVID-19 update; he said that 19 students, 10 teachers and eight staff members tested positive for the virus in the dorms.

He said that analysis was available by region but that it was lacking in providing that information; attempts by the Newsroom to obtain the analysis from officials in the Ministry of Health have been futile.

However, Dr Anthony ensured that all people were identified and isolated according to standard protocols. He said testing is ongoing at every dorm facility nationwide.

The minister previously announced that all students returning to dormitories must undergo a COVID-19 test; this was also extended to teachers.

Last Monday, Dr Anthony first confirmed that students had tested positive for COVID-19 and that it was isolated. Students on their own will receive their daily worksheets to continue their education.

Schools for Grades 10, 11 and 12 reopened in September 2020 while virtual learning and other forms of learning continued for other students.
