2 busy with narco in Berbice

The ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) have greatly seized narcotics during an operation that took place in East Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
The operation on the Upper Corentyne took place between villages No. 62 and No. 75. In one case, CANU ranks found a “salt bag” containing a large amount of marijuana, and arrested two persons in connection with that finding.

The entire operation carried out by the anti-narcotics officers along the Upper Corentyne has yielded a total of 8.5 kilograms of marijuana; 16.3 grams of Ecstasy; 28 ecstasy pills; 9.9 grams of cocaine, and 18.1 grams of methamphetamine.
Over the past few weeks, CANU has made several major drug discoveries during operations carried out nationwide. In fact, earlier this month, anti-narcotics ranks intercepted over 50 kilograms of cannabis in a hire car in Moleson Creek, Corentyne. The driver and a young male passenger have been taken into custody.
Then, last Saturday, CANU ranks found 85.804 kilograms of cannabis in a house in Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). Several people were arrested for that finding.
Head of CANU, James Singh, said the Unit had been expanding its hold further throughout the country, more particularly in Berbice, Essequibo and other key locations.
Singh asked that the key aim of the Unit is to disrupt smuggling routes. “CANU is expanding its operations nationwide – Berbice, Essequibo. The aim is to disrupt the paths and deter people as well. We don’t wait at the airports or wharves, we come where you feel comfortable; we are not going to allow any community to become contaminated, we are working more closely with the community policing groups and other agencies. We want to continue to build public confidence and trust, ”said the Head of CANU.
