A Grove shopkeeper stabbed him to death during the row over gambling money

A 49-year-old man was stabbed to death on Monday during a money dispute, which broke out while they were gambling.

Deceased are Trevor Alfred, a shopkeeper from Nazarene Street, Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara. The incident happened sometime around 18: 30h outside Rocky Shop, located in Second Street, Grove Squatting Area.

Police say Alfred and the 36-year-old suspect were gambling at Rocky Shop when a money dispute ensued. Both were put out of the shop by the owner and escalated the controversy when bottling bottles.

They then armed themselves with knives and began to fight causing Alfred to fall to the ground. This resulted in the suspect pouncing on him and stabbing him several times.

Alfred managed to escape and ran into another street with the suspect in pursuit. They both ended up in a culvert causing other injuries.

The injured man was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital by taxi and pronounced dead on arrival (DOA).

Meanwhile, the suspect, also a mason from Grove, EBD, was taken to the GPHC for treatment and is being taken as a patient under police guard.

The investigation is ongoing.
