Police are pursuing a male and female who raided the home of 87-year-old Homeranie Balram, of No. 67 Village Corentyne, Berbice, and escaped with a quantity of jewelery and an undisclosed amount of money Sunday night.
Based on information received, Section B pensioner No. 67 Village secured her home and retired to bed at about 19:30h. However, around 23:00 hrs, he was awakened by the suspects who instructed him not to say anything as they reconsidered the home.
After collecting the jewelery and money, they made their way to the upper apartment of the house where they repaired their escape.
After realizing the thieves had left, the elderly woman raised an alarm. The Police were contacted and an investigation was launched. No arrests were made until press time.
Just last week, acting Police Commissioner Ryan Hoppie revealed that an overall 4.3 percent reduction in serious crimes committed for the period January 2020 was to be introduced compared to the same period last year.
There has also been an 8.9 per cent decrease in cut and entry and larch, with burglary down by 6.1 per cent over the corresponding period.
However, he noted that the Police had seen a 27.69 percent increase in murders for the same period.
He added that women murdered by their spouses provide for more than a quarter of the total. However, the Force has recorded a 71.4 per cent increase in its clearance rate, and an 83.5 per cent increase for theft under firearms.
