… The company continues to pioneer telecommunications services – Minister Walrond

Over the weekend Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GTT) opened two new stores – one in Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and the other in Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) – which will undoubtedly create employment and bring services closer to citizens.

The company’s CEO, Justin Nedd, said at the opening that there was an ongoing commitment to serving the population, and ensuring all demands were met. The two new stores add to a fleet of locations under the company’s belt, where services can be accessed.
“This is the first of its kind in Parika and we at GTT are very proud to be part of the community. We are proud to be able to bring employment and help the community. Earlier this year, we brought faster internet to Parika and this store is really building on that. At GTT, we are committed to tending to the community and giving people the service they demand and deserve, ”shared Neath.
However, the Minister for Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, highlighted that this expansion is testament to the confidence that GTT provides in the economy. He praised the telecommunications giant for its technological advances in Guyana.

“It’s no secret that GTT has been pioneering telecommunications services in Guyana. GTT has established infrastructure and the latest technology across Guyana and brought us much closer to the reality of the digital world. I have been impressed by the development of your product, the innovation of the team, which is constantly exploring options to drive technology development towards providing more connectivity; and opportunities for citizens and businesses. ”
The Minister said that equal access for all Guyanese should be the mandate of all stakeholders. With the recent liberalization of the telecommunications sector, it urged the company to be innovative.
“I will remain an advocate for equal access for all Guyanese. I think as citizens, we should all be able to enjoy the fruits of our country, no matter where we live … It is clear that GTT has evolved through technology and continues to be a stable service provider in Guyana. Now with the liberalization of the telecommunications sector, and the advent of a competitive environment, we urge GTT to be innovative and aggressive in its thrust to emerge as a leader in technological development in Guyana, ”the Minister asked.
In October, the Prime Minister with responsibility for telecommunications, Mark Phillips announced that the Government had issued Commencement Orders, bringing into full effect the Telecommunications Act 2016 (the “Act”) and the Public Utilities Commission Act 2016.
That would have ended the 30-year-old anti-competitive telecommunications monopoly, and Phillips said he had “left Guyanese tired, frustrated and behind in the telecom arena.”
A week after the liberalization, the Government began accepting new applications, with more in the pipeline. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo had shared during an engagement that the liberalization is bringing more competition in the sector. He noted that existing service providers such as Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT), Digicel and E-Networks would have to apply for the licenses they did not have before.
