A recent trend of nightjar has evolved in the Region. They prefer bowling over 0 runs for 35 runs by flat and fast bowling. The art of spinning the ball and flying is slowly dying.
Former West Indies spinner Samuel Badree believes that spinners in the Caribbean have poor technique and are too defensive. The Trinidadian is calling for spinners to spin the ball and for regional franchises to play attacking spinners.
“When you look at the records, you see someone like Permaul getting a bag of wickets each season and then at the international level it’s a little different. What I want to see is spinners trying to spin the ball and get different weapons like a spin bowler. You also have other weapons like drift, fly tipping and bouncing. If you have both of these weapons as a spinner, you can be very effective.
“If you only have one weapon (speed), you’ll be ineffective. You may be able to escape in the First Class, but when you get to the international level, you may have a rude awakening, ”the former T20 bowler, who was number one, said on a recent Sean Devers radio program.
The 40-year-old Badree, now a commentator, said in his playing days he had been able to escape not spinning the ball, but now, the game has evolved and spinners must be attacking and spinning the ball. “The game has evolved. When I played, I was able to escape not spinning so much, but things have changed. You can’t be an international player and not turn the ball. ”
“Someone like Kevin Sinclair who is in his infancy has to develop something a little different. If you do not have a mystery, be history. If you like Mujeeb and Sunil Narine, the only traditional spinner surviving in T20 is Mohammed Nabi, who has that deception, flies and varies his speed. Sinclair will have to be versatile and be able to bow at different stages of the pubs, ”explained Badree.
Referring to the Regional Super50, Badree described that tournament as ‘boring’. He noted that bowlers were not trying to spin the ball in the Regional Super50. “Our regional teams do not choose to attack bowlers. We would choose a bowler who will bow for 35 runs in 10 overs for a wrist spinner who will bow 10 overs and give you three or four wickets. Our spinner technique is poor and we will not spin the ball, ”Badree said.
At Badree’s 52 T20 International, he managed to capture 56 wickets with the best bowling figures of 4-15. He finished his career with an impressive economy rate of 6.17 and a bowling average of 21.07. Only Daniel Vettori and Sunil Narine have better economy ratings than Badree at T20 Internationals.
