Lewandowski capped a year to remember with the late Bayern winner

(Reuters) – Robert Lewandowski had a year to remember as his two goals helped Bayern Munich come from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen and reach the top of the Bundesliga yesterday, capping a great 12 months for him and his team.

Lewandowski’s injury-time winner completed another comeback victory for Bayern, ensuring the champions sat at the top of the stands, in front of Leverkusen, heading into the festive season.

That 93-minute goal took the Polar count this calendar year to only 32 days after becoming the first Bundesliga player to be crowned the world’s best at the FIFA Best Awards.

“For a year we’ve had it,” Lewandowski told Sky Sport after the Bayern victory.

“We always want more. And I hope next year we continue to score goals like this to win games like this. ”

The victory at Leverkusen was the final match of the remarkable 2020 champions, where they won five trophies including the Champions League, ending the calendar year after tasting only one loss in each competition.

Bayern fell behind for the seventh consecutive Bundesliga match, but in all seven of those games they have not lost.

“We know we suffer from these attention deficits at the start of games,” Bayern coach Hansi Flick told DW.

“But now we’ve finally had a short break and it’s something we want to improve. This was the finale we all wanted, ending a great year for the team. ”

Lewandowski’s goals ended Leverkusen’s unbeaten start to this Bundesliga season and their coach Peter Bosz felt the loss was unjustified, having seen his side take the lead through Patrik Schick’s slim volley.

“The result is unpleasant and disappointing,” said Bosz.

“However, today the team showed that we can keep up with the best team in Europe. That has to give us confidence. ”
