Mother donates kidney to save son seeking financial help – News Room Guyana

A mother of two, who donates her kidney to save her 15-year-old son’s life, is seeking financial help to offset the cost of dialysis treatment.

Nadia Budwah, during an interview with The Newsroom on Thursday, said the family can barely make ends meet with the medical bills. The teenager, Aditya Mohabir of Breisland, West Bank Demerara, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure in August last year and has since been surviving on dialysis until the surgery is complete.

While the government will bear the cost of the surgery, the cost of treatment for dialysis is solely on the family. Budwah said her son first developed breathing difficulties and started vomiting blood. After his diagnosis, the child was hospitalized for over a month and was subsequently released, but a few days later, his condition deteriorated and he was admitted for a further eight days.

According to the mother, Mohabir needs three dialysis sessions a week but the family can only afford two. In addition, the transportation fees to the Doobay Dialysis Center, located in Annandale, East Coast Demerara, are an added stress for the family.

“Everywhere you go, you have to take a taxi because with his condition you can’t travel by bus and we have to leave home at 4am to take him to East Coast in Doobay for dialysis,” he explained. mother.
In addition, his father is now disabled after suffering a spinal cord injury when he jumped into a canal last year. The mother explained that she had been out of work because of the pandemic. She worked as a bartender to support her family before COVID-19.

The cross-game tests were done to determine if it was a donor cost three weeks ago and it cost US $ 3,800 and according to Budwah, the bill is still unpaid.

“The government is really sponsoring the surgery so it’s the cross fight I have to pay for, the dialysis and aftercare as well because I haven’t worked since COVID-19 started , ”Budwah explained.

The surgery is expected to be done on January 18, 2021 at Georgetown Public Hospital.

“Whatever I’m going through now, I don’t want any other parents going through. When I was much younger, I used to say kidney failure was simple but now I’m going through it, it’s not easy. “
