Pedestrians die after being hit by a pickup on EBD Road

Twenty-seven-year-old Vijay Doodnauth died in the early hours of today after being struck by a pickup on Diamond Public Road, Demerara East Bank on Friday night.

The incident happened sometime around 18:45h when Doodnauth, a resident of Sea Dam Diamond, Squatting District, ran onto the vehicle’s path, owned by the Ministry of Housing and Water.

The driver of the pick-up told police he was heading north on the westbound carriageway of the Public Road and while in the vicinity of Courts, the location of Diamond, the pedestrian, who was standing on the concrete median in the middle of the road, allegedly ran to the path of the vehicle. This resulted in Doodnauth being struck and as a result sustained injuries to his body and head.

The injured man was picked up in an unconscious state by the driver and transported to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC), where he was seen and examined by a doctor. He was then admitted as a patient but subsequently succumbed to his injuries around 02: 22h today.

The body at the Hospital mortuary is currently awaiting a post mortem examination.

Breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver but no traces of alcohol were found. He remains in custody assisting with the Investigation.
