Several were arrested on the Essequibo Coast for violating COVID-19 guidelines

SEVERAL people on the Essequibo Coast were arrested Monday for violating COVID-19 national guidelines. Those arrested were caught in Easter celebration gatherings in wide open spaces in Golden Fleece and Capoey Lake.

The police in their quest to make citizens safe during the pandemic, carried out numerous exercises in the region, especially at popular resorts and beaches. People who violated national COVID-19 guidelines were arrested and transported to police stations.

According to reports, people crowded the popular Lake Capoey to celebrate Easter. Many young people were seen buzzing there, while at the popular Golden Fleece Beach many gathered for a picnic.

A consultant issued by the National Secretariat of the COVID-19 Task Force noted that Easter activities in public places including parks, reptiles, lakes and resorts were prohibited.

Alcohol consumption was also banned. Up to press time, the number of people arrested had not been revealed. They are likely to appear in court today accused of violating COVID-19 guidelines.

To date, District Two has 262 active COVID-19 cases.
