An 18-year-old mother of Jango Street, Parika Backdam, of East Bank Essequibo, is now in Police custody after she allegedly killed her 21-month-old son.
Reports are that the young mother killed the child on Friday. Guyana Times understands that the mother and child, who had a physical disability, were returning from a trip around 19:00 hrs, when the child started crying.
She told Police she then wrapped the child in a blanket and left it at the side of the road in a heap of shrubs. According to the woman’s statement to investigators, she went to someone’s house close to begging the person to make some tea for the child. That’s when the resident asked her about the location of the child who bolted from the house. Police were told the woman, in a fit of escape, had jumped into a nearby canal but was nevertheless beaten by a resident. The resident called Police and also informed the woman’s brother, who lives nearby, of the incident. After being asked about the whereabouts of the toddler, the woman took the Police to the area where she had left the child. However, his lifeless body was fished out of the drain and rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The woman was taken into custody at Parika Police Station while the Police continued their investigation and awaited a post-mortem examination.
