The family was devastated after a good intentional fire

A family of four is now considering their next move after a fire of unknown origin gutted their house at Lot 426 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara.

Sunita Joseph, a teacher at Belle West Primary School, was sleeping with her husband and two children, aged 3 and 10. She woke up around 03:00 hours to find her house in flames, and immediately raised an alarm.

The couple managed to grab their children and exit through the back door, as the fire spread quickly.

Her husband, Abdullah Martin, explained that the flames started in the upper apartment of the two-storey building.

“My wife wakes me up and tells me the house is on fire. When I came out of the room, the whole living room, the wall, the chair, the ceiling, everything was already on fire. All we can do is pick them up and run out of the house through the back door, ”he explained.

“By the time we came outside the whole house was in flames.”

Martin, a taxi driver, said that with the help of neighbors, they managed to save his car which was parked in the yard.

Meanwhile, Joseph, who is also a final year student at the University of Guyana, would have lost her research and study material. She is unsure how to move on from this current difficulty in her life.

The Guyana Fire Service is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Only in February 2017. The family had moved into the house. They estimate that their losses are in the millions.
