Despite successes over the past three years, he said the Government of Guyana remains aware of the need to increase investments in the Peacebuilding Fund in order to fully implement the 2020-2024 Strategy. This vital support is much needed, with the devastating effect that COVID-19 has printed worldwide.
“It has become increasingly clear that there can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development. On this note, Guyana has made a voluntary contribution to the 2020-2024 Strategy in response to calls for a quantum leap in peacebuilding funding. This is after recognizing the continued underinvestment in peacebuilding.
“In addition, the escalation of violent conflicts worldwide since 2010 is pushing us, as United Nations Member States, to take more responsibility to respond with the appropriate level of commitment to tackling this worrying trend and its implications for international peace and security. The level of ambition reflected in the PBF’s 2020-2024 Strategy is exactly what is needed right now and my Government is pleased that it could play a role in this, ”added Todd.
For this, Guyana has welcomed the successful conclusion of the review of the UN peacebuilding architecture and was pleased with the decision to convene a high-level meeting of the General Assembly at the seventy-six session to focus on funding peacebuilding.
“Our hope is that together, we as Member States can craft concrete ways to take this important issue forward for the benefit of the world’s people. Allow me to renew the Guyana Government’s ongoing commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations and assure you that we will continue to do our best to contribute to the promotion of UN peacebuilding efforts, “the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed. .
