There have been 31 new cases of coronavirus recorded

Guyana’s COVID-19 cases have increased to 6541, with 31 new positives detected on Saturday. Active cases are now 355.
The daily Ministry of Health dashboard showed deaths in 167 with 6019 recoveries. To date, 3375 men and 3166 women have caught the virus.
There are five people in the Intensive Care Unit, 46 non-institutional, 304 detached at home and 36 in institutional quarantine.
New cases were detected in six regions, and analysis confirmed six new cases in Region One (Barima-Waini), 19 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), one in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), one in Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), two in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and one in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
The outbreaks in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Region Three (Essequibo-West Demerara Islands), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) remained in 202, 462, 548 and 526 respectively.
On Friday, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony revealed that 30 students, 11 teachers and 13 support staff have tested positive for COVID-19 after schools reopen. These cases were split across Regions One, Two, Four, Five, Seven, Eight, Nine and 10.
“We expect some of the students in the outlying areas to come to those dorms and when they come, they will be tested. Therefore, these numbers could increase. I think the education system is expecting over the weekend that they will have students coming in, ”he added.
The Ministry has recently been able to introduce rapid antigen testing, reinforcing COVID-19 fighting in hinterland communities. Meanwhile, GeneXpert machines have also been deployed in hinterland communities to provide additional support and testing in these areas.
Dr Anthony had earlier shared that they were expecting a spike in cases of coronavirus, following the activities of the Christmas season where many people would have failed to keep to national measures. In light of this, he said more testing was underway as well as preparing hospitals for an increasing number of positive patients. The latter happens if anyone needs to go into hospital; it should be readily available.
The public is reminded of the need to use a face mask correctly and consistently when leaving home; maintain the six-foot physical distance from others and good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
