Vulnerable women receive 15 fully funded First Lady scholarships

Kaieteur News – First Lady Arya Ali has given 15 fully funded scholarships to vulnerable women drawn from two local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on Friday.
An official statement from the Office of the First Lady stated that the beneficiaries of the scholarships are women who are considered to be very vulnerable, due to their past and present living conditions, and the fact that none have been able to complete ‘ r the formal school system.
At a ceremony held in the State, he gave eight of the scholarships to women from ChildLink and seven to girls from Help and Shelter. The scholarships will give the women the opportunity to study and train at Carnegie School of Home Economics for one to two years.
The training will be fully funded by the First Lady’s Office; however, the Public Service Ministry will also provide their support by providing a monthly allowance to cover the cost of transportation, meals and uniforms.
Since then, a Memorandum of Understanding has been established between the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Public Service to ensure that the commitment is fulfilled and that, over the next four years, the Ministry provides similar opportunities for women in need.
The First Lady said that Guyanese must be aware of the fact that women are already disproportionately affected, and more effort should be made to ensure that they are provided with the tools and resources relevant to improve their marketability and integrate them into the workforce.
She said, “I’m very happy to be able to give these women a window of opportunity to empower themselves and positively affect those around them.”
Also attending the ceremony was Public Service Minister Sonia Parag, who expressed her willingness to support initiatives of that nature.
“I jumped at this opportunity to facilitate this activity, specifically about the fact that these women will be empowered to the point of becoming independent. This is what we want to see in society; women are given opportunities and are treated equally, ”expressed Parag.
As well as providing the monthly allowance for scholarship recipients this year, the Minister promised that there will be provisions each year for vulnerable women to benefit from similar opportunities through the Public Services Administration.
