Guyana Police unilaterally blocked traffic to and from the Gift

Dear Editor,

During his entire time in business Giftland has an outstanding record of supporting police cases, from items outside the budget urgently required by the stations, to donations, charitable drives and other donations, including presentation and donations. was supposed to provide 10,000 reusable masks cloth worth over $ 2 million next week.

It was therefore a great surprise that on our busiest night of the year, the police unilaterally prevented all traffic from the highway from entering the center – as a result of that action, thousands of shoppers were stuck, many taxi drivers were denied entry, children waiting for their parents, shop owners waiting for their pickups, pregnant women all had to go the long way out to the access road and beyond as there was no parking available. In addition, thousands of road users were inconvenienced by the unilateral and blatant disregard for any kind of collaborative effort to enforce the curfew in a way that would have avoided this.

Commander McBean could have contacted us and arrangements could have been made to close the doors at 9.30 PM with police officers if they so wished, without causing all this confusion and discomfort that ended in obstruction ‘ caused access road. This leaves the Gifts Group considering how it will see any further partnerships and police assistance, as calls have been made higher up the ladder to any effect; in fact an assurance was given by a senior senior official that the block would have been removed did not happen.

The cruelty and disregard for the public leads me to believe that the culture within the police force needs to be reviewed; this is not how one builds confidence or partnerships with this high-handed arrogance displayed on Christmas Eve.

Truly,
Roy Beepat
Chairman
Gift Group
