NIS offices to fully reopen from tomorrow

NIS has announced the reopening of all offices throughout Guyana from tomorrow, but will be under strict COVID-19 guidelines.

Kaieteur News – The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) announced yesterday that it will reopen its offices from tomorrow.
The offices had been closed for several months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, restricting pensioners and others to restricted walk-in access.
A new board of directors under the CEO of the Institute of Private Enterprise Development, Ramesh Persaud, has been constituted and directed by Senior Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, to turn things around.
NIS, a semi-autonomous entity responsible for collecting contribution and managing a social system of pensions and claims for medical benefits, has been struggling with long-term revenue and sustainability. He has been criticized for poor services.
The Finance Minister had urged the new board to improve claims processing and other services and bring NIS into a state of sustainability.
NIS said that over the weekend, on reopening its offices, tomorrow would also mark the start of its pensions week for January 2021.
The entity, however, warned that for people with transactions, all COVID-19 protocols must be strictly adhered to.
“Everyone who enters the compound will be required to visit the hand washing stations or sanitize dispensers that are installed at the entrance to our compounds.”
He was also reminded that every person will be required to take a temperature test when entering the compound.
“Tents and chairs will be set up to accommodate our customers and facilitate social distance.
Members of the public, although allowed to enter the building, will be monitored to avoid overcrowding, ”said a NIS statement.
