GWI is restarting upgrading the city’s transmission pipelines

Ongoing work is upgrading the water transmission lines in the city.

Kaieteur News – Upgrading of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) transmission pipelines in the Kitty area has resumed and when completed will lead to improved water supply in the capital.
Implementation of this project had begun in 2017, but hiccups were encountered due to the previous contractor’s failure to meet its obligations. The contract ended and legal proceedings were instituted against the defective High Court contractor. This issue is pending.
However, according to GWI, on Friday January 8, 2021, Eping Avenue was initiated by the new contractor, R. Kissoon Contracting Services.
The project includes excavation, installation of a 22-inch transmission pipeline, 4 and 6-inch distribution pipelines and restoration of the work site, including roads and bridges.
The project is funded by the Government of Guyana and is being implemented on Vlissengen Road between Shelterbelt and Lamaha Street, in an effort to provide a better level of customer service.
Arshad Yacoub, Interim Program Manager of the GWI Coastal Program, explained that the project is expected to last for a period of three months.
He explained that when the old mains transmission is interrupted, their water supply is disrupted by customers. This will be something of the past with the installation of this new mains.
GWI said it does not anticipate that the water supply in the project areas will be affected during the implementation of the project.
However, the work being carried out may include “minor” traffic diversions, dust and noise associated with the use of large equipment.
“Excavations may include temporary obstruction of property entrances. GWI seeks the co-operation of residents in the project areas in carrying out this work and thanks them for their patience and understanding during this time. “
