The Economic Saboteurs
DEAR EDITOR,
Another day brings more revelations of financial mismanagement in KN 15th-2021, “$ 116M Signed by Coalition to refurbish Linden Call Center…” To add more insult $ 116M cannot be accounted for in materials. Are the supervisory consultants mentioned in the article, still on the payroll? Is M&P Investments listed on future contracts?
The discomfort with these audit reports is that the government is not reassuring the public that there are currently guidelines and actions in place for all these reported cases to prevent the porous exodus of funds in the future, or adequate supervision of consultants and the rest.
Without hesitation, I point out that the inability to handle finances is a widespread problem in Guyana, leading to the need for multiple audits a year.
More so, now that more millions / billions are being allocated to projects.
It seems that so much depends on only one person approving payment of money without any liability / follow-up or supervision of contractors and others.
Lai Xiaomin, a former Chinese Finance Minister, convicted of corruption, has been sentenced to death. South Korea has upheld its former President’s 20-year corruption sentence – and he’s a woman, incidentally. Former French president Sarkozy faces corruption charges.
Countries 10 times the Guyanese population take a tough stance on corruption / financial mismanagement. So exactly what is the government going to do, with these economic saboteurs?
