Rex Nettleford
I saw that people liked to remember the royalty of his name and nature but I thought King was too tall and mighty so they named him a prince of men and that somehow seemed right.
I got to know Rex Nettleford when I was Editorial Assistant with the West India Commission 1991/92 – who produced the “Time For Action” report, which I think is very relevant. Rex Nettleford was a member, celebrated almost infinitely – an extraordinary dancer and Dance Director, scholar and Professor, head of University, thought leader in every conceivable field, friend and adviser to Prime Ministers, Jamaican and West Indian icon, man of the there is a humanity in it that shone its brilliance and its best in a hundred ways. He would often come to talk to me – about this and that but often enough to do with some point in the Commission’s work – and then we got to know each other well and there was no need for a Commission point, just this and friendship. .
