Region 10 makes a Huge Commitment to Golf


– Sports implemented in all Secondary Schools

Kaieteur News – With golf taking major strides under the stewardship of the Guyana Golf Association, District 10 took a huge step forward on Wednesday by moving to implement the golf program at all seven High schools. (McKenzie High School, Linden Foundation High School, New Silvercity High School, Wismar Christianburg High School, Wisburg High School, Kwakwani High School and Harmony High School).
This bold decision by District Education District Officer Nigel Richards will see over 600 students having immediate access to the sport and an additional 1,400 when the school resumes normal operations. Added to the current school program, Guyana now has over 800 children playing Golf.
Mr. Richards, speaking at the launch, expressed his gratitude to the assembled PE teachers, Ministry of Education Allied Arts Unit, represented by Nicholas Fraser and Lindley Langhorne and GGA President Aleem Hussain for the quick response to the introduction of the game, especially as this is the only covid-19 activity that is fully compliant with the children.
“I have always wanted to try the sport myself and I want to thank Mr Hussain for his amazing efforts to make this possible for our children. In Region 10 we are said to be leading, others are following, and again we prove that to be the case. ”
Ms. Green was joined by Ms. Gordon-Bynoe (HoD English Graduate), Ms. Greene-Brewster (District Education Officer, Primary), Ms. Daniels (District Education Officer, Secondary) Anderson (Class 1 Education Officer) with the REDO. the time to receive his first lesson and prove that his natural talents extend to golf. “There is no reason that Linden and Region 10 cannot produce the next PGA player to compete against Tiger Woods and we have the raw talent, the knowledge, the desire and I will support every effort to make it possible.”
The training program run at Wisburg High School was organized by Lindley Langhorne in collaboration with Nicholas Fraser of MOE’s Related Arts Unit and saw teachers participating in theoretical and practical training sessions in preparation for their individual schools.
With teacher training of at least 30 additional schools scheduled in August, the goal of 5-6,000 new players by the end of 2021 now seems achievable when you look at the numbers and response of students, parents and teachers .
Mayor Linden Waneeka Arrindell and his high-level management team met with the GGA President after the training and discussed working together to develop a Golf course in Linden that could meet the needs of the community while at the same time attracting tourism dollars Golf. “We feel it’s time for Linden to capitalize on the growth and potential that Golf offers and we plan to move aggressively to cater for Mr. Hussain. ”
Several sites in Linden have been discussed and detailed investigations and planning are expected to begin in the coming weeks. According to Hussain, this is in line with the growth plans for the development of the game as construction of the first modern designed course on the West Coast Demerara will begin soon. “We hope that communities will see the need to add Golf facilities to their areas and the EIG will assist with the design and logistics for development.”
The tremendous interest that Golf brings to the public was evident as over 50 people showed up on Day one to participate in the Assuria General Insurance 3-Hole Amateur Golf Championship at Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue. The sponsor was forced to extend play hours initially from 15:00 on Friday and Saturday to accommodate the number of people in a covid-19 compliant manner.
That event is open to the public at no cost with lots of food, fun and prizes available even if you just want to be a spectator.
