Kaieteur News – Residents of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara are calling on the authorities to upgrade the playing field located in Block 8.
Residents of the area told Kaieteur Sport last Wednesday that the facility has not been upgraded in about 15 years and they are being forced to use the ground in its current state.
Ronald Jagmohan, Chairman of Mon Repos Sports Committee, said they have two male cricket teams and a female softball team. He said the club was involved in cricket competitions on the East Coast.
He explained that the land needed to be backfilled and drained properly and advised that a letter was being sent to the SDC, but they had not received any assistance.
Jagmohan said the club has a number of talented players and one of the aims of the club is to keep the young people occupied meaningfully, but it is very difficult to do so without adequate facility.
The Committee was formed 13 years ago and although its members cannot get the best use of the facility they do reasonably well.
Jagmohan said they are looking to form an under 15 and under 19 team, but keeping the youths is very difficult due to the current state of the ground.
Rockaway Group of Companies, meanwhile, has built a bridge for easier ground access. The bridge cost over $ 600,000. The entity’s CEO Hafeez Ali said he was happy to provide assistance and pledged his continued support.
Ali said that it was a lovely facility and he would like to see the Committee make the best use of the facility while they can host games and other activities.
Jagmohan thanked Ali for his support. The land is under the control of Lusignan CDC. (Zaheer Mohamed)
