Mourinho sacked Tottenham after 17 months at the helm

JOSE Mourinho has been sacked by Tottenham Hotspur after 17 months at the club.

The Portuguese manager, who has led Spurs to the Carabao Cup final, which takes place on Sunday, leaves the club seventh in the Premier League with six games left of the domestic season still to be played.

Former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager Mourinho had been in charge of 86 games at the club, having replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019. After taking over the club in ranked 14th in the Premier League, they finished in sixth place.

Friday’s draw against Everton left Tottenham, the 2019 Champions League final, unlikely to reach the top four.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.

“Joseph is a true professional who showed tremendous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level, I’ve enjoyed working with him and I’m sorry things haven’t worked out as we both predicted.

“He will always be welcome here and we would like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”

Tottenham will play Southampton on Wednesday with the club five points off the Champions League places.
