Guyanese accused of wounding T&T artist Soca “Benjai”

Maverick De Abreu, a father of two accused back in 2017 of wounding Trinidad and Tobago Artist Soca Rodney Le Blanc, popularly known as “Benjai”, has been released following a verdict by Chief Justice Faith McGusty.

Confirming this on Monday was one of Benjai’s lawyer, Eusi Anderson.

Anderson noted that the charge against De Abreu was dismissed by the Magistrate due to insufficient evidence. De Abreu initially pleaded not guilty to the charge that, on April 16, 2017, in Palm Court, Main Street, Georgetown, allegedly illegally and maliciously injured Le Blanc.

Based on reports, De Abreu was accused of hitting Le Blanc to his face with a glass bottle, causing him to suffer serious injuries during an argument moments after the artiste wrapped a concert at the popular night spot.

According to reports, a heated argument ensued between the artiste Soca, who was allegedly heavily drunk, and a taxi driver.

Reports are the driver got out of his car and Le Blanc moved toward him. However, after seeing the turmoil outside, De Abreu allegedly rushed out and dealt the singer a single shot to his face with a bottle. Le Blanc was reported, earlier in the night, to misbehave with De Abreu’s girlfriend.

The T&T artiste was rushed to a private city hospital where he received over a dozen facial stitches.

De Abreu, represented by Attorney-General Mark Waldron, had been out on $ 50,000 bail pending trial. Also in 2017, De Abreu was accused of dropping a loaded firearm at this pregnant girlfriend and her sister. The charges against him were dismissed after the women refused to give evidence.

Two years later, in 2019, the Police had issued a bulletin it wanted in connection with the assault of gay rights activist Joel Simpson.
