Terrence Lynch, a 32-year-old businessman, was charged Monday with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest when he made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The businessman was facing a total of four charges in connection with the incident that occurred on April 13.
Lynch pleaded guilty to the first charge and claimed he resisted arrest by Corporal Carl Pedro, a traffic site. For this, he was fined $ 1,500.
However, the businessman denied the other accusations against him. Lynch was also charged with disorderly conduct, assaulting the police officer, and assault with intent to cause bodily harm.
According to the prosecution case, on the day in question, at about 09:55hrs, the traffic cop was performing duties with his motorcycle when he noticed a PNN5061 motor parked diagonally in the 42 bus park.
The site allegedly approached the vehicle and told the defendant about his crime. However, there was an argument between the two. Further, when the Corporal attempted to arrest the defendant, he reported several cuffs to him about his body.
The defendant told the court that he owns a market stall and has been using the same car park for some time now. At that, he explained that when the officer approached him, he became angry.
But Magistrate McLennan told Lynch that he has no right to question the officer’s decision.
He told the man, civilians were given the task of complying and obeying police officers. He also explained that they feel bad judgments are being made, they can contact the nearest police station.
Lynch was released on $ 5000 bail on the charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He got self-bail on all other charges. The matter has been postponed until 1 June.
