Some five months after his appointment as CEO of Guyana Oil Company (GuyOil), Trevor Bassoo has tendered his resignation amid allegations of a large fuel import racket currently being investigated by police.
Today, reports emerged that a businessman claimed officials at GuyOil had contracted him to bring in fuel on the promise of a kickoff.
The businessman, however, claimed that GuyOil obtained a sweeter deal and subsequently canceled his arrangement, causing him to speak out.
According to a source, an officer at GuyOil told police that Bassoo had brought the alleged racket issue to the company’s attention during an executive meeting and linked it.
At the meeting, the official said Bassoo presented evidence of his complexity in the form of WhatsApp printouts.
According to the official, he denied any role in the alleged racket during the meeting.
When contacted, GuyOil Chairman Paul Cheong was tight-lipped on the reasons for Bassoo’s resignation.
However, in terms of the businessman’s story, Cheong pointed out that GuyOil has a transparent and accountable fuel sourcing system.
Meanwhile, Bassoo in a social media post confirmed his resignation.
He said “It has been brought to my attention that news is circulating on social media suggesting that I was sent on administrative leave in light of alleged corruption at GUYOIL. I would like to point out that is CONTENT. I would also like to advise that I have chosen and submitted my resignation to the Chairman and Board of Directors … I intend to seek legal advice after which I will provide more information. “
