A Brazilian miner dies after complaining of pain, abdominal swelling

A Brazilian national, who worked on a gold mining operation in Oku Backdam, Cuyuni River, died Wednesday after complaining of pain and swelling in his abdomen.

Police, in a statement, related that the man, identified as 55-year-old Piawi (the only given name) died in Sand Hill, Oku Backdam around 19:00 only.

Investigations revealed that the deceased had been employed in the mining operation for the past six weeks and was in a hammock inside the camp when he complained to other workers about pains and swelling in his abdomen.

Attempts were made to procure transport for him to obtain medical attention but the man became dumb while waiting.

His body was later transported to Bartica Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor shortly after 14:00 h on Thursday.

Police are investigating the incident.
