A teenage mother in custody after leaving the little boy in the drain to die

A teenage girl has been arrested by police after leaving her 21-month-old son in a drain in Parika Backdam, District Three.

The incident happened around 19:00h on Friday.

Police said the now-deceased child was left in a drain by his teenage mother, who claimed he was hungry so he went looking for something to eat.

Sometime later that afternoon when asked about her child’s whereabouts, she tried to run and jump into a canal. Police were summoned promptly.

After being taken out of the canal he took the police to the location where the child left.

He was immediately rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was checked for any marks of violence but none were found. He was later escorted to Ezekiel’s Funeral home awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.

The suspect was then escorted to Parika Police Station, where he was alerted to the allegations, alerted and issued a statement under caution. She was later taken into custody pending further investigations.
