Pedal cyclist killed in Herstelling accident – News Room Guyana

A 33-year-old pedal cyclist from Herstelling, East Bank Demerara was killed in a crash on the Herstelling public road on Friday.

Police said the crash happened at about 14: 10h and involved a minibus driven by a 43-year-old man from East Ruimveldt, Georgetown and a motor truck driven by a 28-year-old man from Canal # 2, West Bank Demerara.

Inquiries revealed that the minibus was heading north along the westbound drive lane when it collided with the pedal cyclist, who was riding east-west across the road. The bus then hit the parked motor truck.

As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist was thrown onto the road surface where he was injured and then picked up in an unconscious state by public spirited citizens and transported to Georgetown Public Hospital.

There he was seen and examined by a doctor and admitted as a patient at the said institution, suffering from a broken right hand and skull. He subsequently died while receiving treatment.

The driver of the minibus was breathing tested but no traces of alcohol were found. Police did not release the victim’s name.

Investigations are ongoing.
