Rose Hall Town Tigers win first title ever after ten wicket wins over Chesney
– Baldeo hits a prestigious century

Kaieteur News – The Rose Hall Town Tigers Cricket team finally won a cricket tournament after defeating arch rivals Chesney in the final of the Berbice Cricket Board Premium Asphalt tournament and TR Construction’s 20/20 tournament. Founded in 2015, by several veteran members of Rose Hall, MS Youth and Town Sports Club, the team reached multiple semi-finals and finals but failed to capture the BCB title. The tournament had started in late 2019 but the covid 19 virus forced the board to stop the final, which was due to be played last year in March.

Rose Hall Town Tigers won the toss and elected to field. Chesney got off to a great start by openers Yogendra Gurdyal and Former National Player Imran Khan. The attacking pair added 85 for the first wicket in eight overs, Khan hit four boundaries and two sixes in his score of 43 but Gurdyal in a superb display knocked Chesney’s carry power to a grand 194 for two off their twenty overs. He finished on 99 not out, while J. Latchana contributed 25 with a six and a boundary. Leroy Bristol took one wicket for 29 runs from four overs in an otherwise poor bowling display by the Tigers bowlers.
Needing to score 195 runs from 120 legal balls to clinch their first ever title, Rose Hall Town Tigers started as a house on fire as former national player Delbert Hicks hit speed controller Imran Khan for three sixes in the first over, and it cost twenty-four runs. . Chesney’s bowling attack never recovered and they were pulled apart by Hicks and his opening partner Balchan Baldeo. Former national player Baldeo tasted eight huge sixes and ten boundaries in a majestic 116 not out, while Hicks also finished unbeaten on 77 not out in the highest ever 201th unbeaten opening stand; – Berbice Cricket 20/20 second division record for opening pair.
BCB President Hilbert Foster congratulated the Rose Hall Town Tigers on winning their first BCB title and urged them to use the championship victory to achieve greater success. He also urged the Chesney team to continue to work hard as many cricket tournaments are underway.
The management and staff of Premium Asphalt and TR Construction Ltd were particularly thanked for their support and Foster expressed confidence that the relationship would continue in the future. Foster also encouraged the teams to invest their championship prizes into getting cricket gears for themselves and to stop supporting the nearby rum shops. He firmly stated that clubs cannot always expect the BCB to support them unless they invest in themselves.
