Guyana Police (GPF), in a statement today, said it hopes to reassure the general public that it continues to aggressively pursue its crime-fighting strategies while maintaining its mandate of public safety and security.
These intelligence-led strategies include mobile, foot and bike patrols; roadblocks, raids and searches among others; together with the support of the Neighborhood Policing Groups.
According to the police, consistent operational activities have led to a 29.8% overall reduction in serious crime for this year to date, compared to the same period last year.
“There has been a 38.4% reduction in armed robberies using firearms by the perpetrators and a 47.7% reduction in armed robberies where other instruments have been used. Murder has seen a 22.9% decrease with 37 so far this year compared with 48 for the same period last year, ”added police.
In addition, the GPF said recognizing that mentally-minded individuals have been riding motorcycles and bicycles in their theft attacks on citizens, extensive campaigns are ongoing in Police Departments to reign in and detain these vehicles and arrest people where applicable.
The GPF said this has led to the retention of a number of motorcycles and bicycles which are being processed for legal ownership and other issues.
Furthermore, Police said nationwide operations by its Narcotics Department resulted in a total of 111 kilograms 11.4 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) and 267.2 grams of cocaine being intercepted and prosecuting several people.
“Despite the tireless efforts in his crime-fighting avoidance, Guyana Police are reminding members of the public to remain safety conscious as they go about their daily efforts and urge them to take precautions as well others, trying to refrain from moving around. with large sums of cash and avoiding routines in their movements, wherever practicable, ”said the GPF.
