A dispute over money between two men who were gambling has led to the death of Grove shopper, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The dead man has been identified as 49-year-old Trevor Alfred of Nazarene Street, Grove Squatting Area, EBD.
The incident happened sometime around 18: 30h outside Rocky Shop, located in Second Street, Grove Squatting Area.
Police say Alfred and the 36-year-old suspect were gambling at Rocky Shop when an argument over money followed. Both were put out of the shop by the owner and escalated the controversy when bottling bottles.
They then armed themselves with knives and began to fight causing Alfred to fall to the ground. This resulted in the suspect pouncing on him and stabbing him several times.
Alfred managed to escape and ran into another street with the suspect in pursuit. They both ended up in a culvert causing other injuries.
The injured man was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital by taxi and pronounced dead on arrival (DOA).
Meanwhile, the suspect, also a mason from Grove, EBD, was taken to the GPHC for treatment and is being taken as a patient under police guard.
An investigation is ongoing.
