An 86-year-old man was killed Monday night after being hit by a car on Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
The dead man has been identified as Neville Williams of New Scheme, Herstelling, EBD.
According to police reports, the motor car – PYY 114 – was heading south along the eastbound lane of the eastbound carriageway on Providence Public Road, at about 21:30h when the driver allegedly walked on across the road to the path of his motor car. Due to the close distance, the driver said the front left side of his motor car collided with the victim.
As a result of the collision, the deceased collapsed on the road where he sustained injuries to his body. He was picked up in a conscious condition by the said driver and transported to Georgetown Public Hospital. There, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The deceased’s body is currently lying in GPHC mortuary awaiting Post Mortem Examination with allocation.
The driver was subjected to a breathing test and no traces of alcohol were found in his system. However, he is currently in custody as further inquiries are pending.
