A Sunday afternoon outing with friends turned tragic when a 24-year-old medical student from the University of Guyana (AS) made a fatal dive into a lay-by in St Ignatius, Central Rupununi, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). The dead woman has been identified as Kimberlee Yow, also from St Ignatius, Lethem.

Based on reports received, on the day in question around 15:00h, the third year medical student was picked up by a group of friends to go swimming. However, just after 18:00 h, her sister received a phone call that Yow had drowned and her body was subsequently recovered.
Details of the incident are still sketchy but her body is at Lethem Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem. The young woman who has now died, during her studies, stayed in Georgetown but returned to her home village since the tertiary establishment closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the friends the young woman went swimming with were detained and questioned by the Police.
