An escaped father admits he helps Mazaruni refugees

Kaieteur News – The father of a Mazaruni prison escapee has admitted to helping his son and the other escape, as the manhunt continues for the four high-profile convictions.

The man, Ralph Jones, father of Rayon Jones, 28, of 121 Timehri, Demerara East Bank, admitted to police that his son had contacted him sometime after they escaped and informed him of his actions.

According to a police report, Ralph told investigators that the four escapes turned up at his house on Wednesday around 01:00 o’clock, which is located at Fourth Avenue, Bartica.

The escaped prisoners have been identified as Imram Ramsaywack, 25, of 7 Adelphi Village, East Coast Demerara; Kenrick Lyte, 44, of Grant Good Intent, Lower Pomeroon River; Samuel Gouveia, 36, of 13 Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara; and Jones.

Under further questioning, Ralph told police that when his son and the other escapees came up at his home, he had provided them with a change of clothes and collected the clothes they were wearing and left them in an alley on the side of his home.

Yesterday, a patrol of police ranks went to the scene where they found a ‘salt bag,’ which contained the following items: clothing, shoes, deodorant, tops, pillows and pillow cases, along with a bottle of Red Star rubbish , toothbrush and food bowl.

As the manhunt continues for the four convicts, Joint Services is urging all law-abiding citizens to report to the nearest police station or call 455-2238, 455-2222, 455-2241, 226-4585, 225-2700, 225- 3650 or 911 if seen. All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Kaieteur News had reported, at about 07:15 o’clock, last Tuesday that during the unlocking of the Brick Prison (Solitary Department), the ranks on duty discovered that the padlock to the entrance gate had been tampered with. Further checks were carried out and revealed that two bars in the cell had been broken.

The matter was then reported to Mazaruni Prison in Charge, Senior Superintendent (s) Kofi David. David then ordered a roll call and when finished, the four convicted prisoners were not accounted for at Brick Prison.

As a result of the incident, a Joint Patrol was launched to the outer perimeter of the prison and ranks have been conducting water, air and land patrols to recapture the four convicts.

Although Guyana has not carried out any executions since 1997, two of those who escaped were sentenced to death. Those two escapees are Ramsaywack and Lyte, while Gouveia and Jones pleaded to the lesser count and were jailed for manslaughter.
