(Guardian of Trinidad) Trinidad and Tobago cricketer Kieron Pollard has firmly established himself as one of the greatest performers in the shorter forms of the game after his spectacular display of power hitting on Wednesday in Antigua and Barbuda.
The 33-year-old 33-year-old joined Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa and Yuvraj Singh of India as the only batsmen to crash six sixes in one over in the limited overs format as he led the West Indies to victory four wicket, with 41 balls to spare after losing six wickets, over Sri Lanka in the inaugural CG T20 International at Coolidge Cricket Ground.
Fresh from captaining the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force to victory in an unprecedented seven-game run that ended with a 152 run victory over Guyana Jaguars in the West Indies Cricket CG Super50 Cup on Saturday at the same venue, Pollard spinner loft Akilaq Dananjaya overlapped the ropes six times in a row over the pubs’ sixth over.
In his previous match, the Sri Lankan grabbed a hat-trick (three wickets in three balls in a row to eliminate Lewis, Chris Gayle (0) and Nicholas Pooran (0) to put the West Indies in trouble) persecute 132 to win.
On Thursday, T&T Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath said Pollard’s sporty description defies description and underlined his ability to rise to the occasion that makes him a truly inspirational leader.
“We have now become accustomed to these exhilarating performances in all aspects of the game by the West Indies white-ball captain, batting in the crucial stages of the game, bowling at death, or committing spoiled catches gravity in the field, ”said Bassarath.
The head of T & TCB said his outstanding feats have made him stand out in championship-winning teams like the Red Police, West Indies, and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
Incidentally, the three, Pollard, Gibbs and Yuvraj are Mumbai Indians players.
“Now he is the only second cricketer after Yuvraj to break six maximum at T20 Internationals. This is also the second demonstration of a power hit recorded in the Caribbean following Gibbs’s feat in a 50-Over World Cup match in 2007 at St Kitts & Nevis against the Netherlands, ”said Bassarath.
West Indies legend, Sir Garry Sobers, was the first to set the standard for six hits when he played for Nottinghamshire in English County Cricket against Glamorgan in Swansea, Wales on August 31, 1968.
Bassarath said Pollard seemed to improve with age, proving he was the leading winner in three winning teams in the past six months with Mumbai at IPL 2020 in the UAE, Red Force in CPL 2020 in Trinidad and Tobago, and a recent Regional CG Super50 Cup in Antigua and Barbuda.
Bassarath said there will be a big loss after Pollard as he will not be available to the Red Force captain in the CWI Regional 4-Day Tournament as he will be on franchise club duty with Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
“The TTCB congratulates our captain on his record-breaking performance that has made T&T proud and warmed the hearts of his fans worldwide. Polly is an outstanding ambassador for our country who has rightly earned his name in the history of cricket, ”Bassarath.
The TTCB boss extended his best wishes to Pollard and the entire West Indies team for the remaining two T20 matches, followed by the three ODIs against the Sri Lankans.
Meanwhile, the President of West Indies Cricket (CWI), Ricky Skerritt, has congratulated Trinidad and Tobago Red Force on their outstanding performance, to win the CG Super Insurance CG Cup at Coolidge Cricket Ground.
The Red Force had a dominant win in last Saturday’s final, with 152 runs over the Guyana Jaguars, and a perfect record in winning all seven games. Shutter Kieron Pollard was given the coveted honor of picking up the Sir Clive Lloyd Trophy.
Skerritt sent short messages of congratulations to President Bassarath and Pollard following the Final.
Commenting on the overall tournament Skerritt said:
“This was an amazing show of power from Trinidad and Tobago from start to finish. It was a whole team effort and Red Force found a game winner at every stage. The other five franchise teams, including losing the Guyana Jaguars final, all worked hard and demonstrated good fighting qualities to varying degrees. But the Red Force was more dominant and consistent than ever, and simply unobstructed. ”
In a direct note to Bassarath, Skerritt said,
“Congratulations on a great tournament and a Final victory for TTCB and your team. This incredible performance should emphasize the vital importance of planning and preparation. I hope it also reminded us why cricket administrators should not throw away older players while these players still have equal value to their team and country. Successful cricket teams employ a healthy balance of youth and experience, just as your team did in winning this tournament. ”
President Skerritt also thanked the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, local health and medical officials, tournament officials and operators of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association, the Leewards Board, and CWI who worked diligently to make the CG Insurance Super-50 event such a success sweeping.
