CCW wants GUYOIL to honor a labor agreement

Dear Editor,

The Union of Clerical and Commercial Workers (CCWU) has expressed deep concern to Guyana Oil Company Limited (GUYOIL) over the Company’s recent decision not to honor an Agreement with the Union.

CCW represents GUYOIL employees. In recent years the Company and the Union have agreed that pay rises should be paid to employees based on a performance appraisal system. The Company now believes that there would be no increases for employees this year.

The position now taken by GUYOIL runs counter to a letter received, dated September 10, 2020. The letter stated that “the Board of Directors, at its Extraordinary meeting held on September 07, 2020, has decided that Pay-for-Performance will apply to pay increases for the financial year 2020. ”But the Union is now told that the Company cannot honor the Agreement for this year. This has caused great distress to the workers.

CCW therefore calls on GUYOIL to honor its Agreement with the Union or face industrial action.

Correctly,

Sherwood Clarke

President General – CCWU
