CDC uses social media platforms to relieve disasters

Kaieteur News – The Civil Defense Commission has been playing an important role in assisting neighboring countries in receiving supplies after catastrophic events. In doing so, SDC has turned to social media platforms to receive and distribute much needed information.
The CDC sent over 275 tons of relief supplies through the merchant ship, Lady Fazeela, to Saint Vincent yesterday. This is now his third trip to the country affected by a volcano. With this, the CDC has resorted to using various social media platforms to efficiently spread awareness and obtain feedback from the affected country.
Kaieteur News contacted the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Patrice Wishart, to inquire how the platforms are helping to provide the relief needed for disaster-stricken countries. Mr Wishart said this approach to the issue is far more efficient than traditional methods and has given tremendous results to the CDC.
He further mentioned that taking the electronic method was more reliable and faster than any other method, which the CDC could have taken. Mr Wishart also said the platforms are a better way to get information from affected countries because of how popular and accessible they are.
SDC has been using these platforms and their effectiveness by creating a ‘Needs list’ on Facebook, where people can see what is needed right now and give a helping hand. CDC uses Facebook, Twitter and also their website page to transmit information to the public. The needs list is checked daily and then acted upon by the GDC accordingly.
Lady Fazeela is said to be arriving in Saint Vincent with the necessities by next Saturday after stopping in Barbados to drop supplies as well.
