Christmas greetings to all man
DEAR EDITOR,
December 25 is Christmas Day, the most famous holiday in Guyana and Guyanese of all backgrounds, regardless of religion or race, it will celebrate Christmas at home and in the diaspora. Christmas is a time of joy, peace and goodwill towards mankind and strengthening bonds with loved ones. In the Guyanese tradition, Christmas is a time to spread happiness with family and friends, enjoy the festivities, attend parties and indulge in some of the best Christmas dishes.
This Yuletide season should be a time of reflection on our lives and how we must double our efforts in the year to come to live in peace and harmony, and to develop and make Guyana a prosperous nation. It is a time when Christians come together to sing carols and celebrate the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ joyfully. Christmas 2020 will greet those of us who feel on top of the world, happy and healthy, despite the many and varied challenges we have faced during the year. However, it will see many others feeling depressed and unhappy, some through their own shortcomings, while others may experience circumstances – – unemployment, homelessness, poverty or personal illness.
We hope that those less fortunate in Guyana and around the world will have the opportunity to experience the joys of Christmas through the generous acts of kindness of those who are better off and who are aware of their obligation to their fellow man / woman. On this festive occasion, everyone must pray for peace, for the hospital bed riders, the less fortunate, and those who have lost loved ones during the year, especially because of the horrific COVID pandemic- 19. We must also pray for those who are battling depression and alcohol and substance abuse, and hope that their spirits will be raised as they seek help.
It is that time of year when the poor feel, most severely, the deepest distress of being unable to provide for their families as they would like, especially their children who are too young to even understand the meaning of poverty. We should show compassion towards them as Jesus Christ did for the needy in an earlier time. Essentially, the scene of the Birth of Jesus birth depicts suffering and poor human conditions in Guyana, where the elderly, the homeless and the single mothers and their children are the ones who deserve help.
Christmas is also a time to heal and forget the hurt, envy, persecution and bitterness, and to renew our love for one another; holding hands of friendship with neighbors and friends; to those from whom we are disengaged and have done us wrong. We must recapture the spirit of the message that brought joy to the world 2000 years ago from Babe Bethlehem. However, the spirit of giving has not been easy for many who wanted to give but are not in a position to do so. Needless to say, the true meaning of Christmas continues to avert the poor and decline in Guyana. Too often the greedy, not the needy; the rich and powerful and not the poor and powerless who enjoy Christmas.
We must not forget the tragedies the country has experienced, the goodness and kindness shown to us by others, and be thankful for the peace that surrounded our nation during a time of a testing and scary election that continued for five months and change of administration thereafter.
The festivals may give the political directorate and the opposition the opportunity to reflect on themselves and their behavior and the importance of the inclusion of everyone in society, so that they can make better decisions for the benefit of the people, and that 2021 will be a year of healing, reconciliation, cooperation, honesty, and genuine and competent leadership. We must all pledge to work to free Guyana from poverty, crime and chronic unemployment and the pandemic; pray for all his leaders and resilient, loving and caring people, and hope that they will live to see many more Christmas. We wish everyone a safe, happy, peaceful and enjoyable Christmas.
We at Globe-Span Television in New York are seizing this opportunity to wish all our patrons, guests and listeners / viewers in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Guyana and elsewhere a Merry Christmas!
