Colchester boss backs Jaguar Harriott to continue scoring run

LONDON, CMC – Colchester United interim first-team coach Wayne Brown has backed Guyana international Callum Harriott, who netted twice in Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over Carlisle United, to continue his goal-scoring form for the remainder of the English League Two season .

Harriott’s second-half brace, where a penalty shoot-out with a long-range strike, ensured Colchester’s first win in 15 games.

This was the eighth goal of the season for Harriott, 26, who had a loan spell at the club in 2015-16 before rejoining a two-year contract in September 2019 – two months before he scored his first goal for the Jaguars in Guyana’s 4-4 victory 2 over Aruba in a CONCACAF League of Nations game.

“The lads were fantastic. We had to survive the storm as such and we knew they were going to come out of the blocks and they have blown teams away this season in the first 20 to 25 minutes of games and had a couple of goals up, ”Brown said.

Of Harriott’s winning goal, he added: “It was a great strike and we know Cal can produce that.

“He has that in the locker and we’ve seen him many times this season and many times when he was here before, a few years ago.

“That will put his confidence in the good of the world and hopefully take that on, for the rest of the season,” added Brown, who managed Harriott during his first stint at the club’s caretaker.

Colchester had fallen behind to Jon Mellish’s first-half strike at a shady JobServe Community Stadium, but battled back to win and are now 10 points above the relegation zone.
