Recent calls by opposition parties in the National Assembly for greater inclusion on sectarian communities and parliamentary selection are unlikely to favor Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon in rejecting the suggestion.
During a press conference on Monday, Harmon was asked to comment on the joyful parties: Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), A New and United Guyana (ANUG) and The New Movement (TNM) and their recent calls for inclusion .
Harmon, who belongs to the main Opposition, Partnership for National Unity / Alliance for Change (APNU / AFC), pointed out that LJP presidential candidate Lenox Shuman has already been appointed Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly .

Weighing their concerns that they had been excluded from parliamentary committees, Harmon suggested that it was too late for them.
“I think we’ve already made that decision. We’ve gone through the process of electing a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, we’ve gone through the process of appointing the members and Chairs of these committees, ”he said.
“And it’s quite strange that, at this point, when all these committees have started to work, this noise is made,” Harmon also said, going on to accuse the merry parties of having an agenda to dilute APNU / AFC’s presence on the committees and to note that it does not see “how that is going to happen.”
In a statement on Saturday, the joyful parties called for their inclusion in the decision-making pathways offered by parliamentary committees, to ensure the transparency and efficiency of a “progressive society”.
The merry parties had pointed out that the current standing orders governing the selection of these parliamentary committees continue to cover only two parties by forcing all other parties to come under the discretion of the Leader of the Opposition.

The parties called for adequate representation of all voters by removing the control that most opposition parties have to decide where small parties should sit on the various committees. Going forward, the joyful seat will offer these improvements. The APNU / AFC is currently the largest party on the Opposition bench.
“This gives the largest opposition control over whether third parties will have a seat on parliamentary committees, and stabilizes an undemocratic system that leaves a significant proportion of the electorate unrepresented in decision-making processes. All voters represented in the National Assembly should be fairly represented at the board, and this should be rejected in standing orders, ”the wrongdoer announced.
Together, the three merry parties won a single seat in the National Assembly of 65 seats following the March 2020 General and Regional Elections. The number of votes indicated that the trio, LJP secured the most votes with 2657, while ANUG and TMN secured 2313 and 244 respectively.

The length of the terms, according to the joyous agreement, states that LJP in the form of Shuman would occupy the seat for two years, six months and 20 days, while ANUG would serve for two years and five months, and TNM for 80 day. All three parties had previously committed to act as a broker between the Government and the main Opposition.
Deputy Speaker Shuman had previously told this publication that he would use his voting rights in the legislative branch for the benefit of all Guyanese, but is particularly committed to advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples, because according to him , the first people of the country are largely. not represented in the National Assembly. Constitutional reform was also on his agenda.
Meanwhile, this announcement reached out to Shuman on Monday to confirm whether he or his party had ever been consulted on nominations to any of the parliamentary committees. However, calls to his number were not answered.
