Constitutional reform: justice and peace

There must be many of us in the Caribbean who, considering one matter or another, have some Robert Nesta Marley words (6th February 1945 to 11th May 1981) in mind.

This is exactly what happened when I was considering President Irfaan Ali’s remarks earlier this month on the ethnic situation in Guyana. He is widely reported to say that we are all ‘consumed’ by racism and individuals use it as an opportunity to deliberately affirm their own position and ‘misleading things’ and repackage and disseminate it in a way that promotes feelings of hatred, racist feelings and distrust between the people. ‘He called on us all to criticize those who use racism for their own selfish reasons. He said his government is ready and willing to work with all parts of Guyanese regardless of who you voted for or how you look, to help them realize their aspirations. The first two lines of the following well-known question by Bob Marley came to mind.
