Coping with pandemic fatigue – Stabroek News

Has COVID-19 threatened living started to wear you down? If so, you are not alone. For months, people around the world have had to adjust to living under the threat of this pandemic. Many “have made huge sacrifices to include COVID-19,” said Dr. Hans Kluge, World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe. “In such circumstances, it is easy and natural to feel indifferent and depressed, to experience fatigue.”

What is Pandemic Fatigue?

Pandemic fatigue is not a medical condition but is a term used to describe the natural feelings that many people experience due to the uncertainty and prolonged disruption caused by a pandemic. While each person reacts differently, some common signs of pandemic fatigue include:

● Lack of motivation

● Changes in eating or sleeping habits

● Discontent

● Emphasize tasks that would normally be handled well

● Difficulty concentrating

● Feelings of despair

What can you do?

● Stay physically distant – but not socially. Stay connected with your friends through video chats, phone calls, or emails and text. Reach out to friends when you’re having a bad day, and check in regularly to see how they’re doing. Exchange tips on what helps you cope during the pandemic. Find ways to do something kind for a friend, and you’ll make a bad day feel better.

● Make the most of your current circumstances. Instead of focusing on what you can no longer do, look for ways you can take advantage of your situation. For example, are there projects you have time for now or hobbies you can pursue now? Can you spend more time with your family?

● Keep to a routine. Make a timetable that reflects your current situation. Set aside specific times for school work, secular work, and home tasks as well as times to look after your spirituality. Include other healthy activities, such as spending time with family, being outdoors, and exercise. Review your schedule periodically, and revise it as needed.

● Continue to practice COVID safe behavior. Check trusted local guides regularly and consider if you’re still careful. Focus on how your actions will affect you, your family and others.

● Seek comfort in spirituality. Many people have stated that they have found comfort and peace in their religion.

Why is pandemic fatigue serious?

Pandemic fatigue poses a serious threat to our safety and that of others. If we do not fight it, we may gradually begin to lose our motivation to follow COVID-safe practices. Over time, we may become complacent about the virus, even as it continues to spread and kill. After tired of living under restrictions, we may seek more freedom, which could put us and others at risk.
