Kaieteur News – Berntice Corentyne East Division Six was crowned Guyana Police Commissioner’s T20 Cup champions following an 11-run victory over the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) in Tuesday’s final.
Despite an 85 attack by TSU’s left-handed opener, Kemol Savory, Division Six defended 149 at Force Sports Club’s Eve Leary.
Region Six were reduced to 13-2 with the loss of Amsterdam’s Kedar wickets caught off Diquain Clarke for six and Kevon Boodie bowled by Eon Rodrigues for seven after they were inserted.
However, Daniel Samaroo and Kareem Mentore repaired the early damage with a third wicket stand of 54. Mentore hit three fours and one six before being run out for 29, while Samaroo added another 31 with Philbert Wilburgh.
However, Pacer Rodrigues ended their opposition when he took Wilburgh for 13 which included four and six. Samaroo followed shortly after bowling by Jermain Semple for a maximum score of 39 which included two fours and one six.
Division Six were pegged back somewhat in the final stages, but Troy Drakes kept the scorecard ticking with a valuable 28 as his team lost nine wickets. Semple claimed 3-29 and Rodrigues 2-23.
Savory and Alex Burnett held 27 for the opening stand with Savory having the hunt in fine style drawing four off Drakes and C. Mitchell.
Nonetheless, Drakes gave his team the lead by having Burnett hit for five.
Subsequently, TSU regularly lost wickets courtesy of some consistent bowling by Drakes and Mentore as they were reduced to 51-5. Drakes R. Grosvenor (02) had a lbw, while Mentore sent back Andy Gillis (01), Rodrigues (00) and Zane London (02).
But Savory and Dellon Allicock resurrected the hunt with an entertaining sixth wicket stand of 52. The pair timed the ball well as they rotated the strike and sent the balls out.
Allicock hit one fours and two sixes six before he was run out at 24 and as the pressure placed on the batters to keep the score at par Savory was bowled by Mentore after facing 55 balls and hitting seven fours and six six. His dismissal along with two runs out was almost a sign of the end of the hunt as TSU controlled 138-8.
Mentore beat 4-21 and Drakes had 2-26. Mentore was named man of the match and also won the award for best bowler. Other awards went to Kevon Boodie the most six (13), Savory most runs (209), Rocky Hutson most wickets (7) and the best catch, Savory’s best batsman in the final and MVP. The winning team pocketed a trophy and $ 250,000 and second-best trophy and $ 200,000. HQ took the prize in third place.
