The coronavirus has spread to many villages in the Western Islands of Demerara-Essequibo and Demerara-Mahaica, as Guyana continues to record more positive cases, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said Tuesday.

Authorities say Region four (Demerara-Mahaica) remains the epicenter of covid-19 with the highest numbers recorded according to ministry records. Of the 11,901 confirmed cases as of Monday, the Ministry of Health said there have been 1,306 cases in Region Three (West Demerara / Essequibo Islands) and 5,708 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) since the virus was detected first in Guyana last year in March.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony says that while there are hot spots, the virus is spreading in Essequibo’s three Islands region – West Demerara and four Demerara region – Mahaica.

“Generally, when we look across the saying East Coast or Georgetown or East Bank, almost every village, there are one or two cases. Similarly, in Region Three in Tuschen, we have seen more cases but in different villages across Region Three one or two cases exist, ”he said.

The health minister says the spread has registered the need for citizens to continue to obey COVID measures thrown by members of the public.

Dr. Anthony that all are now exposed due to the prevalence of the virus in most of those two administrative regions.

Over the past few weeks the Ministry of Health has intensified the COVID-19 vaccination exercise by lowering the qualifying age to 18 and over because more young people become seriously ill with the disease.

Guyana has vaccinated more than 80,000 people with injections from India, Russia and China.
