Crime rate in Kaneville leads to discrimination against residents – Guyana News Room

From murders to robberies and assaults, the high crime rate in Kaneville, on the east bank of Demerara has led to stigmatization and discrimination against residents when visiting health centers, police stations and even when applying for jobs.

This was revealed by residents when they met with Labor Minister Joseph Hamilton on Wednesday in the community.

Many residents said they had been robbed more than once and feared living in their homes. They said even more worrying is the response from the police when a report is made.

Residents were then assured by Divisional Manager Senior Superintendent Linden Isles that there was a process to report any misconduct by the police.

“I would like to tell the residents of Kaneville that when there is inappropriate misconduct of police officers, report it and when it comes to our attention, we will take action,” said the Commander.

The Commander explained that a WhatsApp group had recently been formed between residents and the police to report any police crime and misconduct; encouraged residents to use this platform.

In the meantime, residents complained that when they visit health centers in nearby communities, they are receiving treatment because they live. To this end, residents are calling on the authorities to build a health center along with a school, recreation facility and police outlet in Kaneville.

In response, Minister Hamilton promised residents to take their concerns with the Ministers for Local Government and Regional Development, Youth Culture and Sport and Home Affairs.
