Employee detained for killing neighbor

Kaieteur News – A 26-year-old man was detained in prison on Tuesday for allegedly killing his neighbor who refused to buy a pack of cigarettes from him.
The man, Devon Boucher, 26, known as’ Kingman, ‘a laborer, from the Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, Demerara East Coast, appeared at Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Alisha George.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleges that on February 25, 2021, at the Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, he murdered Clifton Bhagwandat, 30, a horse cart operator.
According to a police report, the incident happened around 17:20 o’clock. The report further noted that Boucher and Bhagwandat were neighbors and that he was on speaking terms. On the day in question, Bhagwandat went to Boucher to buy a pack of cigarettes, but he had short money.
Apparently, Boucher became agitated and a dispute ensued between the two men. The man then grabbed his money from Boucher and said he went to the Chinese store to buy his cigarette.
However, Boucher allegedly ran to his house and armed himself with a knife, which he allegedly used to stab Bhagwandat several times.
The report further noted that the people of the area had heard the commotion and assembled, but Boucher escaped. The matter was reported to Beterverwagting Police Station and the Ambulance Service of the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) was summoned.
However, when he arrived at the EMT’s, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The next day, Boucher surrendered to police.
