Essequibo man kills suicide after attempted murder of 17-year-old girl

A 22-year-old man reportedly committed suicide after he assaulted and stabbed a 17-year-old girl in the Essequibo River on Sunday.

Police said the teen and his siblings were by boat heading to Fort Island in the Essequibo River of Hubu, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) when the dead man approached them in another boat and forcefully boarded them.

The incident happened just around 11:45h Sunday in the vicinity of Fort Island.

The man was armed with a broken heart and was heard telling the girl “all the time you cheat me” while dealing with several blows to her head and hand.

In an attempt to stop the suspect, the teenage sister pushed her over the head but managed to pull herself up and fired a cut at the sister, causing her left hand injuries.

Again, he was pushed overboard and the cuticle fell into the river. Police said the suspect then swam to his boat and left the scene.

The teenager was then rushed to Parika Koker and then to Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was treated and referred to Georgetown Public Hospital. She was received in stable condition.

The matter was reported to the Fort Island Coastguard and as such, they went in search of the suspect but instead found his lifeless body in Morashi, Essequibo River.
