Kaieteur News – The father of one of Mazaruni’s abductors yesterday made his first court appearance and was detained in prison for harboring the four high-profile escapes.
The defendant, Ralph Jones, 60, captain of the 114 Fourth Avenue boat, Bartica, appeared at Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Crystal Lambert.
He was slapped with four counts of harboring a wanted refugee and was not required to plead to the charges after they had been read to him. The Joint Service Unit is still recapturing the escape. The charges alleged him harbor: Imram Ramsaywack, 25, of 7 Adelphi Village, East Coast Demerara; Kenrick Lyte, 44, of Grant Good Intent, Lower Pomeroon River; Samuel Gouveia, 36, of 13 Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara; and Rayon Jones, 28, of 121 Timehri, Demerara East Bank.
Ralph is the father of Rayon Jones, and admitted to assisting his runaway son and other prisoners.

Ralph is represented by his attorney-in-law, Adrian Thompson. In his address to the court, Thompson said his client’s son exhibited at his home with the other three who escaped convictions and demanded food and money.
The lawyer added that his client feared for his life if he refused to help his son and the other escape.
However, Magistrate Lambert remanded Ralph to prison and adjourned the matter until March 5, 2021.
Last Thursday, a police patrol attended the scene where Ralph said he threw away the clothes the escapes were wearing and found a white ‘salt bag’ containing the following items: clothes, shoes , deodorant, tops, pillow and pillow cases, along with a bottle of Red Star rub, toothbrush and food bowl.

Kaieteur News had reported that at about 07:15 o’clock. last Tuesday, during the unlocking of the Brick Prison (Solitary Division), the ranks on duty discovered that the padlock to the entry gate had been tampered with. Further checks were carried out and revealed that two bars in the cell had been broken.
The matter was then reported to Mazaruni Prison in Charge, Senior Superintendent (s), Kofi David. David then ordered a roll call and when finished, the four convicted prisoners were not accounted for at Brick Prison.
As a result of the incident, a Joint Patrol was launched into the outer perimeter of the prison. The ranks have been conducting water, air and land patrols to recapture the four convicts.
The four escapes are still to be located and the Joint Service is urging all law-abiding citizens to report to the nearest police station or call: 455-2238, 455-2222 , 455-2241, 226-4585, 225-2700, 225 -3650 or 911, should they be seen. All information will be treated in the strictest confidence.
